Cortez is known as the shot makers course.
Some consider hole No. 10 as the most difficult par 4 in the Village, and
the par 3 No. 17 is definitely the most recognizable (pictured below).
Originally opened in 1977, this scenic
18-hole championship course is located in the northern section of the
Village and was the POA's second course. At Cortez, it's not the length of
the drive, but he position that counts. The course demands that its players
hit the landing areas or they're in trouble.
The course was closed in 2006 to begin a $1.5
million renovation; $967,000 of the renovation costs were spent underground.
The two-year project included a new irrigation system, new hybrid Bermuda
grass on the tees, fairways, and roughs, new Bent Grass greens, new cart
path overlay with concrete on No. 17, the elimination of 8 bunkers,
rebuilding 25 bunkers, and extensive drainage work. The driving range and
hitting area were enlarged, tees were rebuilt on holes 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9,
11, 15 and 17; forward tees were added to holes 2, 4, 6, 9, 10, 11 and 17;
new site lines were created on holes 9, 10 and 11, a new bridge was
constructed on No. 2, distance was added to all sprinkler heads, and a new
walk bridge was built to the No. 14 tee.
The course re-opened for play in August 2008.
